Uppingham Sport Summer Term Week One

The summer term’s fixtures got off to a blustery start on Saturday afternoon making playing conditions difficult.

Tennis

Our girls’ and boys’ teams took on Rugby School in testing windy conditions, some players were standing in the service box to receive a serve! The matches were competitive including a great comeback from Fourth Formers Tean Moore and Orlando Griffiths who were 3-4 and a break down before fighting back to win 6-4.

Golf

Our golf team enjoyed two close matches this week, against Haileybury School on Thursday and Oakham School on Saturday.

Cricket

On Saturday our boys took on Felsted School with many matches being decided in the last over. Sam Turberville Smith (58) and Carlson White (56) scored half-centuries for our 1st XI and Tom Stone-Wigg scored 47 for our 3rd XI. Our U15As lost out with four balls to spare, with Archie Case scoring 43 not out, William Marriage taking three wickets and Fergus Makepeace and William Harris both bagging a brace. Both U14 games were decided on the last ball of the game – exactly the type of competitive fixture we want our pupils playing in. Henry Peppiatt made 46 for our U14As and Henry Hargreaves scored 35. In the U14Bs Harry Sanders took three catches.

Our U15 girls were set a 165-run target by The Perse School and reached 116 for six wickets with Benazir Zhetpisbay managing to stay in for nine overs in her first competitive game of cricket. The enthusiasm demonstrated by our girls was outstanding in difficult conditions and I am sure they are going to enjoy their cricket this term.

On Sunday we hosted the first round of the HMC Twenty20 Cup on The Upper. Our 1st XI set Loughborough Grammar School a target of 132 and managed to restrict them to 124 to move through to the final. Oakham School played some outstanding cricket to set a challenging 178 off their twenty overs. After losing some early wickets we were behind the run rate and were not able to match Oakham’s score.
