Match Report
Uppingham School Boys-U15B vs  Bedford School
On: Thursday, 23 Sep 2021
Venue: at Home

A warm and breezy Thursday afternoon saw the first outling of the U15B at our “home” ground of the Middle, hosting Bedford. With a more intense warm up and better preparation we were geared up to start the game at a high tempo, but unfortunately as was the case last week, we were unable to secure any real possession in the first 15 minutes. Once again our defence was extremely strong, not missing any tackles, pushing Bedford back with hard line speed lead by the indefatigable Tom Fairs.

And again as was the case last Saturday, eventually the size advantage paid off for our opponents as they did force their way over after relentless pressure in our 22. At 0-10 at half time our messages were clear, but unfortunately disaster struck. The following 5 minutes were the only time we didn’t apply ourselves, but letting in 17 points during that phase ultimately proved too much to wrestle back on the score board.

What came next is yet another example of the great people and friendships we love to show in the 15Bs. The final third of the match was all Uppingham, we started to execute our passing, found spaces in the wide channels, were clinical in ABC at the ruck and even saw some good execution of a second line of attackers. Luvisutto gave us pace from the ruck, Buttery did some excellent work in his ball carry, the Lucases were one again tireless around the breakdown, and most of all Llamas and Voce made numerous breaks.

The never give up attitude was rewarded with another last minute converted try (Llamas, con Richardson). On looking back at our performance we should be proud of hitting many of our targets for the match. We were best off the ball for 90% of the game, our line speed prevented any go-forward, we didn’t miss any 1 v 1 tackles, and when we were able to gain continuity our lighting quick play was executed to a high level at serious speed. If we can piece together 50 minutes a week like the last 20 today there could be some seriously exiting matches on the horizon for this great bunch of men.
