It has been another wonderful week for Uppingham sport with our pupils representing the school in nine different sports.

Table Tennis

I had a fantastic day with our U18A boys’ table tennis team on Sunday as they competed in their Zonal Finals at Grantham Leisure Centre. Captain Alaric Oudin led the team superbly, backed up by top seed Cyrus Wong, Max Cheng and our youngest player, Elliot Leong, who is still only in the Fourth Form. The boys played over five hours of table tennis, each competing in eight five-set matches to finish as runners up behind a brilliant team from Grantham College. We have now qualified for the Regional Finals in Blackburn on Saturday 9th February.

Last week our fives team travelled to Stowe School. There were some terrific performances, notably from Simon Haas on his debut, having taken up the sport only a few weeks ago. Our pupils now have a couple of weeks to prepare for their World Record attempt on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th February.

Our U16 girls played The Perse School on the afternoon of Thursday 17th January for a place in the National Quarter Finals, with Eve McCallum and Matilda Luscombe setting the standard in terms of work rate. We were 1-0 up at half time before The Perse came back with two well taken goals to progress to the next round. Our girls should be very proud of their efforts, it was great to see them all smiling at the end of a very successful season.

Our U15 boys moved into the next round of The Independent Schools Cup with an excellent display against Loughborough Grammar School. Goals from Marcus Aldrich, Hector Trower, Ralph Chivers and a brace from Jack Leggate, along with some excellent goalkeeping from George Rycroft, saw the team through.

On Saturday we took on Stowe School at all age groups. Our 1st XI won, with their great work ethic and commitment rewarded with a second goal from Charlie Hurd in the last play of the game. Our 2nd XI drew for the second Saturday in a row after conceding a sloppy goal in the first few minutes before fighting back to secure a draw.

Our U16As also drew their game in a 3-3 thriller at Stowe, where there was lots of positive play, with William Staveley leading the team magnificently. In our U16Bs Roddy Macdonald was outstanding in goal, making numerous excellent saves.

There was another 3-3 draw at Uppingham as our U15As could not quite see off a tenacious Stowe. Our U15Bs were superb in a 5-3 win with a goal from Adam Gray and two each for William Butterworth and Archie Alton, and William Barclay was on great form in goal.

I watched all three U14 games on Saturday and was really impressed with the progress our boys have made in just two weeks. Our U14As conceded two late goals after Rory Parker had equalised with a fine finish. Our U14Bs enjoyed a very competitive game but could not quite finish off the chances they created; Lucas Shand Kydd put in a Player of the Match performance. Our U14Cs finished their match in the dark on our third Astro with a 3-0 victory, completed with a superb team goal finished off by Mulex Kanokwuttipong. Our U14Ds and U14Es loved the opportunity to play in a competitive fixture for school, meaning that we were able to select almost every boy in the year group.

Cross Country

Our cross country teams had a fantastic opener on Saturday. The girls’ team was led in by Amelie Goetz who looked strong and controlled throughout as she eased to a comfortable victory. She was backed up brilliantly by Captain, Freya Radford, who led by example but paid slightly for the fast early pace she set. Anya Batty made her debut as one of the youngest runners and produced an amazing performance - with training who knows what she could do? Chloe Munro, Emilia Cumming and Fenella Blayney all produced some really strong performances and helped push the girls to a team victory.

Our Inter boys were led by Jolyon Leavesley who stepped up from his preferred 800m to lead the team to victory, where he was closely followed by Thomas Green who has more to come as his training develops. Archie Tweed looked at home as he worked his way steadily through the field; Thomas Alston put in a gutsy performance and Hugo McGuinness, William Lagesse and George Martin all helped the team clinch victory. Our senior boys led by example, finishing in the top three places where Bertie Tweed eased away from the field to post a commanding victory. He was brilliantly backed up by Tom Holmes and Nick Cardozo, who was being stalked for the entire race by a pack of boys but third place was never in doubt. Alfie Baxter and Alexander Nicol-Gent made fantastic debut performances and with a few more races under their belts we will see further progress.

Our girls were playing at various locations on Saturday with a triangular fixture against The Perse and Kimbolton Schools. Our 1st VII continued their great start to the season with some impressive shooting statistics from Marta Korab-Karpinska, Isabelle Hibbard and Lucy Ewbank. Our 2nd VII played some excellent netball, particularly the defence as they brought the ball through the court with great control. With only seven players, and at times with just six as we patched up injuries on the side-line, our 3rd VII put in an impressive team effort.

At Oundle School our U16Bs won against Oakham School and drew with Oundle where Frances Rinfret and Nia Southworth were excellent throughout the matches.

Mengting Dong played so well for our U15Cs, who worked hard against strong opposition. Our U15As put together two very good performances with debutant Antonia Dilkes making a good impression.

Players of the Match for our U14Cs in their two wins at Kimbolton were Elisabeth Dewar and Amelia Hoskins for their superb work rate. Araminta Gordon was Player of the Match in the U14Ds games. Our U14Es and U14Fs trained so hard this week and played superbly against Oakham and Oundle, where their team work was excellent.

We had a decent afternoon at Stowe School for the boys. Our 1st XI fought back from 2-0 for a 2-2 draw with the equaliser in the dying seconds from Harry Miller with a thumping centre back’s header into the top corner. Lincoln Lukose was Player of the Match, with honourable mentions for Jack Pearson and Harry Miller. Our 2nd XI drew 3-3 with George Wignall and Harry Hill, who saved a penalty, the outstanding performers.

Our U16As lost 1-2 after conceding in the last minute and missing a penalty, Samuel Martin was Player of the Match and Mr Prior gave his best impression of Pep Guardiola (Manager of Manchester City Football club)!

A good performance was put in by all this week against Oundle, especially by Dylan Wells who shot for the first time. Felix Baird, Emilia Briggs and Emilia Akathiotis all scored in the high 90s on the five bull targets.

Many congratulations to our captain, Ross Carmichael, for being selected this week to shoot for England in the BSSRA postal competitions.

We took three teams to Haileybury on Saturday afternoon. Eliza Walsh was Player of the Match for our seniors with some impressive stick skills, ball protection and re-defend efforts. It was great to see the teams mixed up and share tactics in the build up to the National Championships later this term. Isabella Lewis was Player of the Match for our U15As, she lead the team well demonstrating good sportsmanship and stepped up to the circle when needed. Our girls had a lot of fight and with no substitutions did a great job of conserving energy and moving the ball. Kate Ewbank was Player of the Match for our U15Bs in a very close encounter.

The girls’ squash team had an exciting opening match of the term against Oundle School. The 1st V lost by the narrowest of margins despite comfortable wins for Meg Sellers and Captain Anna Horwich who both dominated with intelligent shots and speed around the court. Emily Bewes and Georgia Everett both put up particularly courageous and determined fights. The 2nd V won their match with impressive displays from Felicity Chaney and Emmi Malai who both played beautifully in their first time representing the senior squash team.
